Burning Steel #2

Here's another teaser image I did for the comic, "Burning Steel," that I'm working on. I had a lot of fun playing with more cartoon stuff again. I've got a bunch of concept stuff I have to get ready to post up soon.

Burning Steel

Here's a teaser image I recently did for a comic I'm working on called Burning Steel. I don't normally do cartoony type stuff but I have to admit I had a ton of fun with this one. The comic will eventually be posted up on the online web comic that my roommate and I update every monday here: Get Job Hope you like it!

detective story

here's a couple things i've been sitting on for a little bit. the first image is an illustration done at the SafeHouse Atelier. I struggled a lot with this one and there are certain things still not quite working but I learned a lot of things on this one and I'm already on the next one and will be posting it up soon. The second image is some of character concepts for the illustration, a corrupt cop, a deceptive dame, and the PI tangled in it all.

zombie sf stuff and an update

so here is a more fleshed out version of one of the richard thumbnails. I wouldn't say the design is final so much as i just look at this as a jumping off point. I liked a few things about it and it gave me some great design/story ideas for the project so not a total waste of time haha. Always good to get some practice.

and here's an update on that illustration i'm trying to work out.

zombie sf charcters - richard

Richard is the Dad character from my personal project, Zombie SF. He is in San Francisco on business when the big z takeover happens and his goal is to try and find his way out of the city to San Jose where his family resides. Richard's character would be the most proficient with guns and the strongest with most melee weapons. Here are a few thumbs i did for him. I'm leaning toward the last 2 but we'll see. Doing these gave me some other ideas so yeah... we'll see haha.

fantasy smantasy

SafeHouse Atelier has finally started up and we are in our first week of classes. Very exciting, I know. Anyway... I thought i would post up an illustration I'm working on. It's not for a class or anything. Just trying to get better at doing these. I'll be posting the updates as they come. Also I wanted to congratulate my friend Josh Godin on his great new Concept Art job at Bit Trapt

update on the robots and gunslingers.

thought i would post up some updates on the gunslinger character. I even figured i could include the roughs that i did before hand. Earlier in his design i thought it might be interesting if he was blind. I'm thinking about going back to that. You can see on the second value iteration that he has a metal casing over his chest, possibly indicating to a past injury. oh and update on the robot.

these are pencil sketches scanned in and a quick photoshop layer is put on them to try and help show the shapes better.

space cowboy update and also robots

here's and update on the space cowboys i've been working on. I just started working on the sketch on the right last night. I haven't painted over the sketch at all yet. I've been trying to get a solid, rough under-painting under the sketch before i start going over it with a normal layer and painting more opaquely.

space game monsters

here are a few of the enemies you would see in space game. the game itself won't rely heavily on combat but there definitely would be some. it also makes the exploration aspect a little more interesting. basically these guys are created and live inside the titans that you will be spending some time in and are made up of rocks. the white stream you see go through them is a result of a magic current running through them giving them life. just some quick sketches and there's a little guy in there for scale.

CGHub CharacterForge

2 posts in one week. woooh! just a quick note. my friend ryan has been running a sweet competition on CGHub called CharacterForge where there is a new design doc and every week or so and people do characters for the dock showing process and everything like that in between and then at the end there is a poll to decide a winner. I decided to take part this week and give it a shot. you can see my entry below and here's a link to check it out all of the entries too. some really great stuff!

environments from space.

so here's the first drop of some stuff i've been doing for space game. It's a small slice of the pie and i'm trying to get it all organized. I thought i would post up some of the first thumbnail environments i did for it. The game plays really heavily on the idea of adventure and exploration so here are a few different thumbnails with the first few showing some space exploration, the second two are what it might be like on one of the planets itself, and then the last two were just some ideas on what it would be like inside the "titans" which you'll hear more about later. These were really just about trying to get some ideas down visually and seeing what i liked and didn't like from there. anyway, much more to come!

comming soon...

this is an image that i did for another project i'm working on called space game. The game relies really heavily on the idea of exploration and adventure and not as much on combat. the idea is that it is supposed to feel like an old nintendo game cover or what you might find on a machine at an arcade.

freelance and finals

here's just a few things. The first 2 images are from a freelance project i worked on for a few students that were building a 3D game mock up and just wanted some basic stuff. The first image is of their main character and the next is a few small thumbnails for key locations they wanted to show.

The third image is the final for the stronger mutant concept for Frgotown. I decided to go with a. I liked the flame thrower idea and a friend of mine really liked the silhouette. The mutants of this lever are a little smarter as they can use tools, basic speach, etc. They would also act as a much stronger enemy than the weaker mutant. Normally they would probably stick near to the mutant hide outs. I hope you like :)

Stronger Level Mutants

Here's a few thumbnails for another mutant type enemy but stronger. I did these because i knew i wanted a stronger version of the last mutant but i wasn't sure how i wanted it to look. I knew i wanted it to be stronger and probably a little more intelligent. Maybe it uses more advanced tools or even weapons. Here's what i came up with. Something other than mutants coming soon ;)

Basic Mutant

Here's the first few thumbnails i've done for the frogtown project. I wanted to make mutated people that would act as a basic enemy. I decided to go with the middle one. I thought he had interesting potential with carrying around an oxygen thank. Maybe he would swing it as a weapon or something. I hope you like it:)

Hell Comes To Frogtown

Hell Comes to Frogtown (1988) is a movie that takes place in a post apocalyptic world that has gone through several nuclear wars. As a result of the radiation, frogs and toads evolve into a more human like creature. I saw this movie when i was about 12 and for some it has recently come back into my life. Its a bit silly but my love and curiosity for this movie is leading me to do a redesign of it as if it were to be made into a video game. I'll be posting up characters, vehicles, props, etc. with the frogtown logo i made below to show its all part of the same project. I hope you enjoy this journey as much is i think i will:)

zombie sf

This is a really old image. It's my first attempt at an illustration and it is for one of my personal projects called "zombie sf." The central figure shows one of the three main characters. Expect to see a lot more from this project in the future;)

Huck Finn

Some older work from a school project where we broke into teams and took on doing a sci-fi twist on the classic huck finn tale. The team i was involved in choose to do a near future setting where huck joined up with a group of mercenaries to help save Jim, a drug ridden, slowly mutating, human. The concepts below are characters for Huck, Jim, King (a traveling salesman/transforming war robot), and an environment for cairo (a hidden city that helps huck and jim start their path to safety). It was a great team of myself, Karlo Ortiz, Cole Eastburn, Ashley Swidowski, and Ama Busia.

here we go!

Hey everyone, i thought i would start a separate blog for the concept art and illustration stuff i do. I really hope you guys enjoy checking out the different stuff i've been doing for learning and fungineering purposes:) here we go.
